Demise of Google Labs

Just recently Google announced the closure of Google Labs. Although the ideas generated in Google Labs were never expected to go mainstream a number of successful products managed to surface from the project. These include familiar products such as Google Reader, Google News and Google Maps. Google is now making Google Plus it's top priority with over 10 million subscriptions to the service over the past month despite it being by invite only.

Google announce that they are planning to roll out Google Wallet in the near future. Using open ecommerce protocols it will be scalable in regards to the various cards that can be used with it and the number of places that the phone can can be used for payment.

Google has just announced that accessories will be available for their android@home system by the end of the year. The idea is to be able to control the devices in your home from your Android smartphone. Lighting, dishwashers, heater timers and so on can be controlled and monitored from wherever you happen to be. Not only will you be able to unify all your remote controls into one device, you will also with the addition of RFID embedding in household items, be able to detect what things are where in your house. Possibly making a search for the car keys a thing of the past.
